The Origin and Growth of the English Bible

The above drawing shows the gradual development of the English bible as well as the foundations on which some of the main versions rest. Since we are living in a age of printing, it is hard for us to realize that when the books of the Bible were originally written there was no easy or inexpensive way to make copies. Each copy had to be made slowly and laboriously by hand. It was inevitable that many ancient books would be lost. This largely accounts for the fact that all original manuscripts of the Bible have perished, but God in His sovereign grace has protected accurate copies of the originals as well as the writings of the Early church Fathers. Within the writings of the Early Church Fathers there are enough scripture passages used that in themselves there is enough scripture to recreate the Bible with 99.8% accuracy.

The graphic above comes from "The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible" published by the B.B. Kirkbride Bible Co. Inc. (Indianapolis, Indiana) & Zondervan Bible Publishers (Grand Rapids, Michigan).

While I do not agree with some of the "Modern Translations" as pictured in the 3 stacks of translations apart from the lineage of the KJV, I do think that God is able to use them to bring people to Salvation and Growth in Grace for his Glory and thus they should not be a divisive force in the Body of Christ.

I love the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible for it cross-references Bible passages to explain other passages and does not use the "commentaries" of men who are subject to preconceived biases. The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible allows the Word of God (the Bible) to be energized by the Holy Spirit to produce amazing growth in Grace.
