The word Nouthetic comes from the New Testament Greek word "nouthesia" and is most often translated by the words "to counsel", "to instruct", "to admonish", and "to warn". The word means to counsel or to train by the use of words, whether by encouragement or, if necessary, by reprof and correction. It is one of the biblical words for pastoral counseling, and it is included in the title of this organization to indicate the commitment of its membership to counseling that is thoroughly grounded in the Scriptures as the only rule of faith and practice. The word occurs in both its noun and verb forms in the following verses: Romans 15:14, Titus 3:10, Ephesians 6:4, Acts 20:31, Colossians 1:28, 3:16, 1 Thessalonians 5:12,14, 2 Thessalonians 3:15, 1 Corinthians 10:11, 1 Corinthians 4:14. Nouthetic counseling by defination is biblical counseling.
